This is a tale of a veterinary career focused on people, animals, and most notably, rabies. Following a childhood in central Massachusetts (in a family enthusiastic about animals) and working at a local veterinary clinic (which would impact on the lives of several in my family), I embarked on an educational journey that began with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Thereafter, I continued to a veterinary degree from Cornell University in New York and training at the U.S. Army Academy of Health Sciences. After veterinary practice in a declining dairy industry in northern Vermont, I pursued work as the state of Vermont’s first Public Health Veterinarian between the arrival of two different forms of wildlife rabies. Here, I report on various procedures, incidents, and moments (both tragic and gratifying) during that time. However, more than anything, this is the story of a career I would not want to have missed!
