Internal curing (IC) concrete offers a solution by integrating pre-saturated lightweight aggregates, superabsorbent polymers, and polyethylene glycol, which release water during cement hydration. This sustains hydration and minimizes the need for external curing, particularly advantageous in challenging environments and high-rise structures. This chapter delves into the underlying principles and benefits of IC, such as significantly reducing shrinkage cracking by up to 30% and enhancing durability by approximately 35%. It covers critical aspects of material selection and mix design, as well as real-world applications in pavements, bridges, and high-performance concrete. Through detailed case studies, this chapter illustrates the improved mechanical properties and longevity of internally cured concrete.
