Innovative Materials and Strategies for Low-Carbon Concrete
摘要
To control carbon dioxide emissions, researchers are actively working for sustainable building materials to introduce eco-friendly concrete alternatives. With a focus on supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) and binders, this chapter discusses the details of advancements in concrete technologies and explains the methodologies and sustainable materials available to minimize the carbon footprint of concrete. Furthermore, a few carbon sequestration, utilization, and storage options are covered in this chapter. It also discusses the life cycle assessment and economic aspects of these modern technologies. A literature review of low-carbon concrete is presented from the perspectives of climate change control and sustainable infrastructure development. According to research, concrete’s carbon emissions can be reduced by substituting cement with SCMs without sacrificing its strength or durability. Studies show an increment of 18% in the compressive strength of concrete with 15% silica fume content after 55 days when compared to the control concrete sample. Building materials like slag and metakaolin can be utilized in cement to reduce carbon emissions during manufacturing stages. Apart from highlighting different aspects and issues such as material behavior, availability, and market adoption, this chapter offers suggestions for the effective use of new building materials.
