Recurrent herpes labialis (RHL) is a highly prevalent infection mostly caused by herpes simplex virus type 1. Most patients will experience a prodromic phase, which is characterized by a discomfort or a burning sensation most frequently on the lips, before the development of clinically visible signs. Erythema, vesicle, ulcer, and crust will be developed in sequence. Healing is achieved only when this pathway is completed. The conventional treatment for RHL is based on antiviral compounds (such as acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir). However, drug interactions and nephrotoxicity may limit their intake, mainly for older, immunocompromised patients with kidney disease. Therefore, photobiomodulation has been suggested as an efficient tool that is able to significantly shorten the RHL episodes and reduce its signs and symptoms and disease recurrence with the benefit of a side effect-free therapy.
