Transformation of Lignocellulosic Biomass into Biocrude and High-Value Products

A promising step toward reducing reliance on fossil fuels and promoting sustainable bioeconomy is the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into high-value and biocrude products. The processes, inventions, and advancements involved in converting lignocellulosic materials into beneficial byproducts and renewable fuels are thoroughly reviewed in this chapter. Thermochemical and biochemical conversion processes like pyrolysis, hydrothermal liquefaction, fermentation, and catalytic upgrading enable the breakdown of complex biomass structures and the creation of biocrude, biofuels, and chemicals. Important process variables and innovations that increase efficiency, yield, and selectivity are discussed, along with an analysis of high-value byproducts like biochar, bioplastics, and specialty chemicals. The chapter also addresses the challenges of economic viability, technological scalability, and feedstock unpredictability, providing potential solutions and future directions. Through a detailed examination of recent developments, this chapter emphasizes the significance of lignocellulosic biomass valorization in establishing a circular economy and resolving global environmental and energy concerns.
