In this chapter, we describe proof comprehension (and its assessment) as a novel and interesting area for research in undergraduate mathematics education. We describe the history of the construct, how we developed three proof comprehension tests, and report our analysis of their psychometric properties. In particular, we focus on the dimensionality of these tests (and the possibility of providing empirical evidence for a theoretically multidimensional construct) and their sensitivity to the specific mathematical content of the proofs. We discuss implications from this study and offer directions for future research.

摘要

In this chapter, we describe proof comprehension (and its assessment) as a novel and interesting area for research in undergraduate mathematics education. We describe the history of the construct, how we developed three proof comprehension tests, and report our analysis of their psychometric properties. In particular, we focus on the dimensionality of these tests (and the possibility of providing empirical evidence for a theoretically multidimensional construct) and their sensitivity to the specific mathematical content of the proofs. We discuss implications from this study and offer directions for future research.
