Smallholder African farmers make up the majority of producers of the food consumed on the continent. The ability of digitalisation to improve agricultural productivity is widely discussed. This chapter adds to the debate. This chapter explores the challenges of digitalisation by African smallholder farmers, identifies existing and potential opportunities for digitalisation in farming, and proposes interventions. Underpinned by the capabilities approach, this chapter is based on an all-inclusive qualitative research approach comprising abstraction and a review of grey and academic literature documents. The chapter shows that when effectively implemented, digital solutions can provide agricultural production through improving operations, planning, decision-making, and resource management This chapter recommends that African governments meet their smallholder halfway in technology adoption these farmers make the majority of agricultural producers on the continent.
