This epilogue forges a bridge from the arrival of refugees and other migrants in asylum reception and the concomitant questions of home, to the broader transformation of society through migration. The point of departure is my former home in southern Germany, a small, largely conservative place with a longstanding history of long-term residents, people who left and people who arrived. In 2023, the place made migration history when Ryyan Alshebl became the first Syrian person who had fled to Germany in 2015 to be elected as mayor. Here, I look not only at current changes and societal contestation around questions of home but also at possibilities of joint endeavors—across borders and political divides—in postmigration societies for more just and liveable futures.
