According to a recent World Bank report, Vietnam is ranked 4th globally in plastic pollution. The country discharges almost 1.8 million tons annually, mostly ending up in the rivers and oceans. On a per capita basis, plastic consumption in Vietnam has increased substantially from 3.8 kg per person in 1990 to about 41.3 kg per person in 2019. This has caused significant environmental damage, particularly to marine wildlife and the overall health of ecosystems. From an economic perspective, the pollution of waterways and oceans is expected to reduce Vietnam’s GDP growth by 6% by 2035. In recent years, several initiatives have been taken to address this issue by the government as well as by private sector organizations. The transition to a circular economy, particularly reuse/refill models is now being emphasized. In this chapter we highlight one such innovative solution known as Refill, a convenient alternative towards sustainable consumption that enables households to reuse plastic containers and simply fill them with products and pay for the weight as needed. This business model innovation synthesizes two existing ideas: mobile delivery and refill stores. As more and more households join the refill culture, this solution will keep the environment, oceans, cities, and communities’ plastic-free in the future.
