The hazardous outcomes of the production and disposal of plastic products constitute a global problem threatening social and environmental sustainability practices. The alarming annual production of about 300 million metric tons of plastics worldwide is anticipated to skyrocket further until 2060. This menace is prevalent in developing nations with relatively inefficient waste collection systems and limited infrastructure. For example, Vietnam's waste management infrastructure struggles to manage its 3.1 million metric tons of plastic waste and can only recycle about 8–16%. The World Bank estimates that Vietnam loses about 75% value of recyclable plastic waste due to improper sorting, collection, and recycling. Consequently, this chapter presents a circular economy model that seeks to provide a sustainable solution to plastic waste as practiced in a Vietnamese social enterprise, ReForm Plastic. This chapter will highlight initiatives by ReForm Plastic that focus on transforming waste into valuable circular resources by upcycling plastic waste into durable and versatile products, utilizing state-of-the-art processing technology in an inclusive approach. The organization was birthed to fill in the gap in the industry that utilized traditional and linear waste management models. This chapter showcases how the organization’s circular economy model unlocks accessible plastic waste solutions for citizens. ReForm Plastic is a manufacturing facility designed to upgrade the region's circular economy. This social enterprise's scalable franchise business model can be applied at a local level and internationally. They utilize a technological approach known as heat compression molding and extrusion molding, which involves the integration of the extrusion process with the shaping of material within a mold. ReForm Plastic offers solutions for all types of plastic waste streams, effectively converting low-value plastics into durable boards suitable for utilization in household items, rubbish bins, and other products both within Vietnam and beyond.
