Shooting Animality: Menelaos Karamaghiolis’s Cinema of Transspecies Poetics
摘要
From orphaned, nameless circus elephants (bonding with orphaned, nameless immigrants) to stray ‘Greekies’ up for adoption by ‘foreigners’, and from stylised, neo-noir Odysseys to raw, makeshift documentary aesthetics, this chapter traces Menelaos Karamaghiolis’s unwavering dedication to an affective cinema that records elusive instances of human-nonhuman bonding, also as a way to talk about the shared precariousness of disenfranchised lives in urban or industrial jungles. Karamaghiolis’s recent documentaries about animals thoughtfully interweave spectral canines, Roma agency, local volunteer work, and privileged, ‘imported’ activism. Throughout his career, Karamaghiolis’s gaze and voice(-overs) keep finding poetry in the most unexpected, and hopeless, of places. The analysis of the director’s filmography is here accompanied by interviews with the man himself, and with J.A.C.E.’s (2011) cinematographer Giorgos Frentzos.
