Geriatric Syndromes: Definition, Assessment, and Effective Therapy
摘要
This chapter describes geriatric syndromes, serious conditions specific to the older adult that fall outside of the traditional view of disease. The prevalence and plethora of risk factors contributing to geriatric syndromes of frailty, delirium, urinary incontinence, pressure injuries, falls, sarcopenia, malnutrition, cognitive impairment, unintentional weight loss, feeding/eating problems, sleeping disorders, and depression are presented. The successes of individual geriatric syndrome assessment tools and the use of the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment are emphasized as the path to prevention and amelioration of geriatric syndromes. Medications associated with geriatric syndromes (MAGS) that exacerbate the geriatric syndrome are identified as drugs to be avoided. Proven nonpharmacological interventions that retard the progression of geriatric syndromes are detailed.
