Purpose: This paper will examine the integration of key Industry 4.0 topics of Digital Twins (DTw) and Human Augmentation (HA) with classical Op Ex techniques for a select Higher Educational Institution (HEI) process. Methodology: A framework for pairing Industry 4.0 capabilities with classical human-based Op Ex practices is presented and shown to be directly applicable to an Op Ex engagement case study focused on the research process between a HEI and Industry. Specific focus is applied to digitalization and connection of process, insight into DTw and HA techniques, and application of value stream thinking. Findings: The presentation of concepts and findings in this paper represent a strategic business value for scaling the impact of Op Ex practitioners, enhanced connection of processes and resources within a value stream, and insight into HEI opportunities for process improvement at tactical and strategic levels. Research limitations/implications: This paper is limited to the examination of a single HEI process. Further studies and papers can explore the quantifiable benefits of such integration. Practical implications: To better leverage emerging digitalization and Industry 4.0 potential, HEIs must integrate these approaches within a robust framework of Op Ex. At the same time, the Op Ex practitioners must consider how to augment their traditional approach to be inclusive of Industry 4.0 techniques. These actions will ensure a balance between digital business innovation and Op Ex. Social implications: While Op Ex training remains visible in course curriculum, HEIs are increasingly turning to digital innovation technologies to address broader operational challenges and enhance business performance. This creates a challenge to the balance between innovative solution adoption and Op Ex strategy. Originality/value: This study offers a novel perspective regarding the integration of key Industry 4.0 topics of Digital Twins (DTw) and Human Augmentation (HA) with classical Op Ex techniques. The findings can guide HEIs in scaling the connection of value streams and their Op Ex engagements.
