The isoquinoline framework is derived from the corresponding acyl derivatives of β-hydroxy-β-phenylethylamines. Upon exposure to a dehydrating agent such as phosphorus pentoxide, or phosphorus oxychloride, under reflux and in an inert solvent such as decalin, isoquinoline frameworks are formed. P2O5 actually exists as its dimer P4O10 with an adamantane-like structure:
