In the expanding patient-centered profession of pharmacy, pharmacists are frequently faced with situations where personal, professional, and societal values are in conflict with one another. Medical ethics underscores what people should do and why. There are multiple ethical principles that have been proposed throughout history, but the primary principles of biomedical ethics include autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice. Some ethical issues are limited to a single ethical principle or involve multiple principles, with one whose priority is easily recognized. However, when the pharmacist is faced with an ethical dilemma, where a situation involving multiple opposing ethical principles is not easily reconciled, determining the best course of action can be difficult. In order to prepare for the challenges that will arise over the course of a pharmacist’s career, it is important to study and understand the fundamental concepts and principles of biomedical ethics.
