Health system pharmacies provide medications and pharmacy services to patients outside of many traditional outpatient, community settings. The hospital, long-term care facilities, and other health system pharmacies operate under most other laws, rules, and regulations that govern the practice of pharmacy in other settings and are discussed in other chapters within this book. However, unique practice caveats within the health system have been the focus of targeted and focused regulation. Many of the laws and rules found in this chapter address medication dispensing, but a few deal with very niche situations that are not found outside of the health system. Two of Alabama’s special pharmacist licenses, the parenteral and consultant pharmacist, work within health system pharmacy and have legally been outlined with specific qualifications, responsibilities, and continuing education requirements. Several rules and regulations that impact health system pharmacy practice are administered by agencies besides the Alabama Board of Pharmacy, but the importance to the pharmacy professional must be held in the same regard. It is because of this that health system law and regulation can be among the most difficult to identify when learning pharmacy law and regulation in Alabama.
