Second Phase: 1903–08, Placing Improvisation in the Production Process
摘要
By the end of the first decade of work at the Moscow Art Theatre, Stanislavsky’s reputation as a highly creative director and creator of dazzling production plans was cemented forever. However, the emphasis on production plans far from tells the whole story of Stanislavsky’s methods between 1903 and 1908. In other words, he still found space for the application of improvisation. In these years Stanislavsky used improvisation in the following three ways: (i) to call on the assistance of the actors when creating abstract, non-realistic mises-en-scène, synonymous with the symbolist plays that were popular at the time; (ii) in rehearsal, when he himself offered improvised demonstrations in order to get his meaning across to the actors; (iii) as a technique for actors to explore their characters, which included improvising in everyday life.
