The chapter deals with the issue of regeneration of abandoned Villages with a specific focus on refurbishment strategies at the building scale. The chapter describes the methods used to recognize the values of pre-existence, acquired in the knowledge phase and the indicators, originated from the collected data’s critical elaboration, in order to hypothesize new functions compatible with the existing ones and capable of linking the physical renovation to the territory development and the local community. The chapter illustrates some renovation strategies, which are considered the most appropriate for the specific context and how to select materials and technologies with a view to the sustainability of the intervention, taking as reference some particularly significant Italian case studies. The design choices of the case studies are distinguished by the will to preserve the pre-existence while not “freezing” what exists, enhancing its original features but inserting without false camouflage new elements consistent with it in design and materials. The case studies are presented through a description of the specificity of the existing buildings and the motivations that guided the design choices in a circular economy prospective. A special focus is devoted to technological design with construction detail drawings.
