Lake Victoria’s Floating Island Problem
摘要
Floating islands in Lake Victoria—the world’s second-largest freshwater lake—pose significant challenges to transportation, fisheries, irrigation, and water quality management. Despite their substantial socioeconomic and ecological impacts, the formation mechanisms and spatiotemporal dynamics of these mobile landmasses remain poorly understood. This chapter presents the first systematic investigation of floating island dynamics within Uganda’s Nalubaale, Kiira, and Bujagali hydropower dam complexes. We examine (1) the hydrological and ecological drivers of island formation, (2) their movement patterns and persistence, and (3) the resulting operational impacts on hydropower generation. The analysis provides critical insights for dam management strategies while advancing fundamental knowledge of lacustrine floating ecosystems in tropical freshwater systems.
