The submucosal cleft palate (SMCP) may be challenging to identify and treat. A perusal of the literature from the last 60 years reveals that our evidence base has, as yet, failed to identify a standard definition of the SMCP. Consensus on evaluation, monitoring, or treatment approaches is also lacking, which in turn influences outcomes research. A review of the literature concerning definition, evaluation, treatment, and outcomes follows.
