Life Cycle AssessmentLife cycle assessment (LCA) has been acknowledged for more than ten years as a useful tool for methodically assessing the possible environmental effectsNanomaterial environmental effects of manufactured nanomaterialsManufactured nanomaterials (MNMs) over the course of their whole life cycles. The growing number of LCA studies that have been published in recent years provides evidence for its developing prominence in the discipline. While a number of studies have been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and potential of wastes for nanotechnologyNanotechnology, a thorough examination of the environmental performanceEnvironmental performance and impact of Nanometer-Scale ParticlesNanometer-scale particle environmental impact (NMs) using the LCA approachApproach has received less attention. This study highlights the necessity of doing “life cycle"-based evaluations as early as feasible in the process of developing new products in order to have a better knowledge of the possible effects that nanomaterialsNanomaterial may have on the environmentEnvironment and human healthHealth across the course of a product that uses nanotechnologyNanotechnology. To get insight into present practices, limits, advances, and problems of LCA applicationApplications in NMs, this article also outlines and explores the basis of the LCA methodology, which includes aim and scope, definitionNanomaterial system boundary, system boundaryLife cycle boundary, life cycle inventoryLife cycle inventory , life cycle impact assessmentLife cycle impact assessment , and interpretation. The results of this work will be relevant to future investigations into LCA NMs in particular, as the release of NMs into the environmentEnvironment has not previously been investigated because of a lack of knowledge about the underlying processes and routes.
