Tertiary Students’ Perspectives of ChatGPT for Academic Purposes in the Bahraini Context

The current study examines the increasing incorporation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education, with particular emphasis on the utilization of ChatGPT by tertiary students in Bahrain. This research investigates the perception of ChatGPT in augmenting academic endeavors through structured qualitative interviews with 40 students at Gulf University. Findings of the current study state that students predominantly perceive the tool as having a substantial beneficial effect on research, problem-solving, and time management. Participants indicated that ChatGPT rendered intricate subjects more comprehensible and enhanced their productivity in academic endeavors. Despite the significant advantages, apprehensions over potential overdependence on AI tools, ethical implications, and the impact on students’ critical thinking abilities have also emerged. The interviews revealed a widespread recognition of ChatGPT's capacity to deliver immediate information and support; Nevertheless, there were concerns regarding the potential erosion of students’ independent learning skills. Based on these observations, the study advises that educational institutions in Bahrain, particularly Gulf University, should contemplate the integration of ChatGPT and analogous Artificial intelligence tools into the academic curriculum in a regulated manner. This would enable students to leverage the benefits of AI while alleviating the hazards of dependency and ethical concerns. Such incorporation would enable students to exploit AI effectively while preserving their intellectual development.
