Worked Casting Design Project
摘要
This project-based chapter develops, in readers, the skill of designing the casting system for manufacturing a component with specified dimensions. The drawing of a metallic component is given, including its 3-D sketch. The project requires to design the pattern, the sprue, the riser, and the mold for producing a defect-free casting. The pattern design involves the calculations for the allowances and developing the final drawing of the pattern. The sprue design requires the determination of the sprue dimensions (for ensuring laminar flow of molten metal), a suitable volumetric flow rate, and the minimum time to fill the mold cavity. The riser design calls for the determining the riser dimensions to ensure that the metal in the riser would solidify last as compared to the casting. Finally, it is required to draw the final sketch of the mold showing the dimensions of the pattern above and below the parting line so as to determine the metallostatic force.
