Nature and Value of SEL in the Asian Region
摘要
Despite their shared emphasis on academic achievement, China, Japan, and South Korea have increasingly recognized the importance of social and emotional learning (SEL) in their education systems. This chapter provides an overview of the emergence of SEL in these countries, highlighting both common themes and unique perspectives. Educators across the three nations identify communication, stress management, empathy, and respect as crucial SEL skills. However, distinct approaches have also emerged, reflecting each country’s cultural context and values. China emphasizes sympathy, role models, and introspection; Japan focuses on human relationships; and South Korea prioritizes mental health, cultural adaptation, and contextual relevance. As these countries continue to integrate SEL into their educational frameworks, they face challenges in adapting programs to their specific cultural contexts while leveraging SEL to support students’ holistic development. By embracing both shared principles and culturally responsive approaches, China, Japan, and South Korea can pave the way for a more comprehensive education that nurtures students’ academic, social, and emotional growth.
