The archaicity and complexity of the Lithuanian language are often viewed as a reflection of the authenticity of Lithuanian culture and heritage. Against this backdrop, in the past few years, the theme of gender-sensitive language has sparked specific controversies in the Lithuanian public sphere. This chapter examines the recent gender and language debate in Lithuania, via a critical discourse analysis of the responses to the latest proposal of gender-sensitive language use. Overall, a rather uniform focus on the topoi of tradition, history and authority is observed, with selective engagement with more contemporary discussions of gender and linguistic inclusivity, and with fairly consistent attitudes towards normative constraints of language. More broadly, the findings suggest that the debates intersect with broader historical and sociopolitical issues and highlight the challenges of adapting gender-related linguistic frameworks in a context where such theories remain relatively scarce, positioned at the periphery of linguistic discourse, and shaped by external influences. This ultimately reflects the tension between preserving cultural heritage and adapting to new cultural forms that extend beyond Lithuania and approximate the global context.
