Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury occurs frequently, especially in active individuals. The incidence of ACL injury ranges from 30 to 78 per 100,000 in the general population. The incidence of ACL injury peaks in adolescence and early adulthood. However, the incidence, injury mechanism, and risk factors may vary among age groups. Most of the ACL injuries have a non-contact mechanism. Risk factors of ACL injury are categorized as intrinsic and extrinsic. Some, but not all, risk factors vary by age. Major lesions accompanying ACL injuries include meniscal tears, cartilage, collateral ligament, and posterolateral corner injuries.
