Two case studies are described in the appendix. The West Sole WE platform was fabricated for BP in 1965 and installed in July 1966 as an unmanned single well satellite unit from which gas was exported to the nearby manned platform WB. It was one of the first platforms to be installed in the UK sector of the North Sea and was designed for a life of 25 years. The platform was decomissioned in 1978 and a substantial number tests were undertaken on the recovered structure. Similarly, the Viking AD clamp was also removed after several years of service and tests were performed to establish its condition.
