As already noted, materials used in offshore structures contain defects from the fabrication process and are susceptible to degradation processes in the operational phase. Hence, a significant part of the assessment of materials in an ageing structure is to establish an understanding of the condition of the material, taking into account of the effects from fabrication and operation. This chapter also discusses how an evaluation of the robustness of a material is one possible method for life extension assessment.
