Standard Precautions (SP) and Transmission-Based Precautions (TBP) are fundamental in mitigating the risk of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and occupational infections among healthcare workers (HCWs) in clinical environments. Despite their crucial role, adherence to these practices remains insufficient, with significant gaps in both understanding and implementation among HCWs. This chapter aims to offer a concise yet comprehensive guide for implementing SP and TBP across healthcare facilities. It addresses both organizational and individual responsibilities, highlighting structural and operational strategies alongside essential practices for daily use. To support these recommendations, a review was conducted using PubMed and Web of Science, encompassing English-language articles published from 2014 to 2024. All types of evidence were considered, except those lacking publication references or relevance to the research objective, with data analyzed following the most recent guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). From this review, 15 studies were selected and categorized based on their focus on SP compliance, adherence to guidelines, and implementation of TBP. The analysis revealed methodological shortcomings in many studies, with only four meeting high-quality standards. The findings underscore the necessity of consistent and proper application of SP and TBP by healthcare personnel. SP serve as the foundational layer of protection, while TBP provide additional measures for specific clinical scenarios, and both are critical to minimizing infection transmission. This chapter concludes that enhancing adherence requires a robust commitment to education, institutional support, and continuous assessment of infection prevention practices, ensuring the safety of both patients and healthcare staff.
