Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are the most prevalent adverse incidents in medical delivery systems globally. These infections significantly contribute to avoidable ailments, fatalities, and increased healthcare expenses. Numerous HAIs are triggered by microorganisms that inhabit the patient’s body (normal flora) or originate from transient sources like healthcare workers’ hands, contaminated instruments, or the surrounding environment. A foundational understanding of the microscopic entities that frequently lead to infections and the techniques employed by the clinical laboratory for their identification and analysis is crucial for the daily operations of the infection prevention and control (IPC) team. Team members who possess expertise in microorganisms can more persuasively advocate for essential IPC practices such as hand hygiene, standard precautions, transmission-based precautions, sanitation, and disinfection. Additionally, being informed about the characteristics and behaviors of the microorganisms responsible for infections within a healthcare setting, specifically healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), can guide the IPC team in selecting the most efficient prevention methods. Familiarity with the clinical laboratory procedures can also assist the IPC team in ensuring the collection of high-quality samples for precise identification of the infection-causing microorganisms.
