Robots in Healthcare: Measuring Acceptance of Professional Caregivers Towards Finding Key Requirements for System Design

Research on the requirements for robots in nursing care mostly focuses on the people in need of care and less on the nurses who must work with the robots. Existing studies show that although nurses have a positive attitude towards robots, the prevalence of robots in nursing is still low (around 10%). One possible reason for this is that none of the studies focused on the professional environment in nursing, which has a wide range of requirements. In this study, we attempt to understand nurses’ expectations of robotic systems by first mapping and classifying the wide variety of existing robots in nursing. Then, the recognized Almere model for measuring technology acceptance is adapted to the professional environment of nurses and finally a study is conducted with 49 professional nurses representing almost all care facilities. Of these nurses, 11 had experience with robots, but only in five cases were the robots used in the professional environment. Our results show that the perceived benefits of robots and trust in technology are positive, while the ease of use and functionality leave much to be desired. The reflections on the situation in care and the results of the survey can help to close the gap between the needs of care and the mindset of robot research and development.
