This paper explores the evolving relationship between research and society, focusing on the importance of Public Engagement (PE) within the context of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI). While PE activities are increasingly evaluated by institutional bodies such as ANVUR in Italy, they remain marginal in the academic accreditation processes. This gap has contributed to a lack of emphasis on PE among academics and researchers. The Rome Technopole project provided an opportunity to develop a centralized system for managing PE activities, offering insights into how digital technologies can enhance cooperation among universities, research centers, and industries. The digital platform not only supports the collection and evaluation of PE activities but also promotes greater alignment between research and societal needs. This work demonstrates that, when integrated into a structured framework, PE can significantly contribute to responsible and sustainable innovation.
