Human Exposure to Hexavalent Chromium

Tobacco smoke contains chromium (VI). Indoor air polluted by cigarette smoke contains tens or even hundreds of times higher concentrations of chromium (VI) than outdoor air. Chromium (VI) compounds are widely used in pigments for textile dyes (ammonium dichromate, potassium chromate, sodium chromate), inks and plastics (potassium dichromate, sodium chromate, lead chromate, zinc chromate, barium chromate, calcium chromate), corrosion inhibitors (barium chromate, calcium chromate, sodium chromate), wood preservatives (chromium trioxide), metal finishing, chrome plating (chromium trioxide), and leather tanning (ammonium dichromate). Chromium (VI) can be present as an impurity in cement, so it is a ubiquitous carcinogen. Living or working near anthropogenic sources of chromium (VI) exposes people to breathing contaminated air or drinking contaminated water. Industries and occupations in which exposure to chromium (VI) is high are welding, production and use of metals and alloys containing chromium (stainless steels, steels with a high chromium content), galvanization, and production and use of pigments, dyes (application in the aviation industry), catalysts, chromic acid, tanning agents, and pesticides. Chromium (VI) compounds cause lung cancer, and very weak positive associations have been documented between exposure to chromium (VI) compounds and cancers of the stomach, nose, and nasal sinuses. In analytical papers, no one mentions metabolites, but they are determined as elements after destroying samples and releasing them from complexes with proteins where they are bound.
