One of the objectives of this book was to locate prominent codes, icons, and symbols that cartoons have banked upon over the years under the reference period to create a visual code of sorts. This code cartoons often relied as a shorthand to communicate with audiences. Discovering these codes, icons, and symbols helped to create a visual vocabulary that would identify what narratives cartoons have established through various signs and symbols thus highlighting the subconscious naturalizing power of visuals. The chapter is built around this visual vocabulary and the brief contextualization of the symbolism used by the cartoons throughout the reference period.
