Custard Apple Peel Biochar-Based Nanocomposite as a Novel Adsorbent for Removal of Acid Red 114 Dye: Adsorption and Phytotoxicity Studies

Water pollution is a serious global concern which shows adverse effects on environment and human health. In present study, batch experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of custard apple peel biochar (CAP) and MnO2/CAP biochar nanocomposite as adsorbents for removal of AR114 dye from aqueous solution. The results revealed that MnO2/CAP biochar nanocomposite significantly enhanced AR114 dye removal efficiency as compared to CAP biochar. Maximum 93% AR114 dye removal (80 mg/l) was reported at pH 4 with 0.6 g of MnO2/CAP biochar nanocomposite. Furthermore, nanocomposite adsorbent was easy to synthesize under moderate conditions as there is no requirement of chemical capping agents, thus it is cost-effective and environmentally benign approach. Thus, application of CAP biochar or MnO2/CAP biochar nanocomposite are renewable resource which have significant potential and can be used for treatment of dye contaminated effluents at large scale.
