The cryptic nature of many pest species makes it especially difficult to manage using traditional control measures especially for crops with long lifespans such as coconut. Over the years many papers have debated on the true identities of important coconut pests. These include monitoring of spread of the OrNv-resistant Rhinoceros Beetle (Oryctes rhinoceros) Guam Biotype, CRB-G, among islands in the Pacific, characterization of the invasive Coconut Scale Insect, Aspidiotus rigidus, from its close relative Aspidiotus destructor, and establishment of the demarcation between the Red and Asiatic Palm Weevils (Rhynchophorus spp.) and morphs of the Coconut Hispine Beetle (Brontispa longissima). Several studies presented the use of molecular tools to further characterize these particularly problematic species and improve IPM strategies involving identification, surveillance, risk assessment, monitoring germplasm movement, and biological control.
