Integrated Pest Management of Plesispa reichei Chapuis (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)

Plesispa reichei Chapuis (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a significant pest of coconut seedlings, particularly in nurseries and young plantations. P. reichei targets young, unfurled coconut leaves, causing extensive damage that can lead to plant death, especially in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. The pest’s biology is well-documented, with a life cycle of approximately 31–46 days and multiple generations per year. The pest poses a serious threat to coconut seed quality, thereby affecting overall coconut production. Several control methods are employed within the IPM framework, including mechanical, biological, cultural, and chemical controls. Mechanical methods involve manual removal of pests but face challenges due to labor intensity and cost. Biological control has shown promise, especially through the use of parasitoids such as Ooencyrtus podontiae and Tetrastichus brontispae, which significantly reduce pest populations. Cultural control strategies include the use of resistant coconut varieties, such as the GKN cultivar, which has demonstrated resilience to P. reichei infestations. Additionally, chemical controls, specifically the application of insecticides like Carbaryl and Metamidophos, are effective when applied at regular intervals during the seedling phase. The chapter emphasizes the importance of understanding the pest’s bioecology to implement successful IPM programs. By integrating varighlights the need for continued studies on pest-resistant varieties and optimized biological control methods to enhance IPM strategies in coconut cultivation.
