摘要
Cities are in constant transformation due to technological advancements that are evolving the citizens’ urban life. Recent years have witnessed tremendous changes in the urban environment due to the proliferation of mobile social media networking, which has transformed the way people appropriate and interact in public spaces. This created new urban movements with different orientations that overwhelm the social reality using digital networksNetworks that produce a hectic flow of information on public spaces in both digital and physical realms. Some of these movements relied unintentionally on digital placemaking to convey their rightful ownership over public space. This chapter delves into the physical, social, and digital dimensions of public spaces that are associated with social media networking technology. It explores the potential of social media as a digital layer to placemaking in regenerating public spaces, aiming to redefine the role of social networksNetworks as a tool for generating new typologies of public space that can address the deficiencies of public spaces in cities. This is done by merging social media attributes and measurements with those of public spaces to investigate the different urban characteristics offered by social media, such as the physical, social, and digital parameters of urbanismUrbanism that can rearrange social and spatial practices. The outcome will be a model combining these different parameters that require assessmentPublic space assessment when considering public space efficiency in the digital era. By adopting this model, policymakers and urban planners can leverage social media and digital tools to create more vibrant, inclusive, and responsive public spaces that meet the diverse needs of contemporary urban populations.
