Cities are engines of diversityDiversity, and a vital public realmPublic realm is supported by the diversityDiversity of daily, weekly, and seasonal activities generated inside of buildings. Meaningful thresholds between interior space and the public realmPublic realm are ubiquitous in vibrant cities but creating them in a new context is often elusive. In this way, interior urbanismUrbanism is not as simple as visually connecting interior to exterior; it requires interweaving private actions into collective practice. This is a complex field of relations, and a powerful example is the paradox of the global digital economy. Rather than evenly dispersing economic activity, financial networksNetworks have only reinforced the value of places for concentrated physical interaction. It is this intensification of interaction between interiors and urban space that informs the emerging significance of interior urbanismUrbanism. Birmingham, Alabama, a mid-sized city in the southeastern United States, is an excellent case study for interior urbanismUrbanism, particularly as a tool of revitalization. Here, a 10 week undergraduate studio in the Auburn University School of ArchitectureArchitecture, Planning, and Landscape ArchitectureLandscape architecture proposed an adaptation and addition to an existing government office building. The goal was to create an active edge to Linn Park, a historic central square. The simple geometry of the square and its buildings define a clear civic identityIdentity. This lush park hosts an impressive list of events, but it is forlorn during weekdays and evenings. Growing demand for housingHousing downtown and the announced sale of this prominent site is an opportunity to reinvigorate the park.
