Project governance and sustainability are both fundamental mechanisms for a successful project delivery. In recent years, the construction industry scholars and professionals demonstrated interest in collaborative delivery methods and contracting strategies, such as integrated project delivery (IPD), in which project governance structure is more integrative. While these topics have received tremendous attention from the literature recently, the interplay between them are yet to be discovered. The goal of this paper is to evaluate the state-of-the-art of research into the links between integrative project governance and sustainability to classify the literature and discuss the theoretical and practical directions towards the future research. To achieve this goal, a literature review has been carried out with focus on project governance, considering the three pillars of sustainability: environment, economic, social. Based on the overall analysis of the results, the research clusters are extracted in three categories as below: Process, Context, and Partners. In addition, an IPD governance-sustainability framework is presented to guide future research in this field. Finally, this paper gathers the segments of knowledge about collaborative and sustainable project governance and discuss how integrated project delivery can enhance a sustainable project governance in the construction industry.
