BIM Training Through Project-Based Active Learning

More than a simple 3D modelling tool, BIM is a set of interacting policies, processes and technologies generating a methodology to manage the essential building design and project data in digital format throughout the building's life cycle. This new way of working also includes a new paradigm in construction projects, breaking down traditional project silos, encouraging a more collaborative project approach. Thus, the training of future construction professionals needs to be adapted ensuring the latter to be prepared to this new reality. The objective of the paper is to propose recommendations for an active PBL strategy, including horizontal and vertical integration. The study use the experience of a group of students in a postgraduate research group putting BIM concepts into practice in a renovation project aiming with the intent of improving their individual competencies. The students’ motivation to implement the BIM Summer Project was to promote the integration of the research group members, as well as practising theoretical concepts. A renovation project was selected as a real-world case. The students were also challenged to apply openBIM principles throughout the project. In a context of project-based active learning objectives, the students organized themselves autonomously practising the following fields, in addition to OpenBIM: Common Data Environment (CDE), BIM Execution Plan (BEP), level of information need, BIM uses and modeling. Targeted competencies included model coordination, cost analysis, information management and project management. These were acquired throughout the experience with the application of Revit, Catenda, Solibri, Plannerly, Miro and Excel. This experimentation of active learning approach demonstrated many benefits for the training of students, who have given positive feedback about their learning, competencies, and self-confidence to move into the industry.
