This paper provides an overview of activities concerning the periodic inspections and calibration of Plant Protection Equipment (PPE) in use utilized in the Campania region, in Italy. The activity started around 2002, with the establishment of a mobile unit (equipped van) designed to offer an optional service to farmers and to promote the sprayer control. These initiatives unfolded within the framework of the national project “Agricoltura e Qualità,” sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture. Successively, a significant boost to the control system occurred following the approval of European Directive 128/09 and the enactment of Legislative Decree 150/2012, mandating inspections. In the Campania region, a network of 13 accredited centers (test stations) conducts inspections and calibrations of sprayers. Since 2018, these centers have utilized a web-based system called Fitolab for data management, archiving, and transmission of documents to relevant offices. Over the last six years, nearly 9,000 inspections have been carried out, encompassing 5,302 assessments on sprayers for orchards and vineyards, 2,972 on boom sprayers, and 585 on other equipment. The average age of the inspected machinery is approximately 20 years. The paper reports the result of a survey conducted on the dataset, highlighting the most common malfunctions and providing information on the brands and models of machinery. Additionally, the paper delineates the methodology implemented by the Campania region in collaboration with CREA-IT, finalized to the second-level inspection system overseeing the activities of accredited workshops. In conclusion, the paper delves into the identified needs and outlines future steps for the continued development of activities related to periodic inspections of sprayers.
