Vineyards of North-East Italy Exposed to Heatwaves: Trend Analysis Based on Satellite Data from Google Earth Engine

Norh-East Italy is a territory that boasts of a highly concentrated vineyard area and produces high-quality wines following traditional methods, especially on steep slopes. Climate change poses risks to vineyard management due to rising temperatures, droughts, and heatwaves, potentially affecting the growing season. This research aims to identify temperature trends and hotspots of increasing or decreasing temperatures in the area. Using historical climate data and satellite datasets from Google Earth Engine, specifically the Land Surface Temperature Dataset of the MODIS Satellite, and weather station data from 1990 to 2023, this study investigates past climate patterns. Findings indicate that the frequency of high land surface temperatures (LST) has increased in the period from 2012 to 2023. The summer of 2022 experienced a significant negative precipitation anomaly and locally important vegetation stress conditions. Heatwaves and maximum 2-m air temperatures are also reporting increasing frequency. These results suggest the need for further research on extreme weather events and future climate scenarios. The analysis aims to enhance water management strategies, providing a foundation for sustainable projects focused on efficient water storage, particularly during dry and hot seasons.
