Sustainable Reuse of Traditional Rural Buildings: Review, Conceptual Framework, and Future Research Directions

In the last 60-years the change occurred in the European agricultural sector determined the destitution of several rural buildings of their authentic use of. A sustainable valorization of vernacular farm buildings represents a key to achieve rural landscape preservation and avoid soil depletion. The aim of this study is to provide a bibliometric analysis of worldwide publications concerning the topics of restoration of traditional rural buildings (TRB). By using the SCOPUS database, papers focusing this topic published in the last 12 years, from 2012 to 2024, have been selected and assessed through a mining text tool. The final aim was to describes the trend of research focusing on this topic, by supplying conceptual frameworks suitable for future research directions. Finally, by analyzing the obtained results emerged that the sustainable restoration process of a TRB involves economic, social, cultural, and environmental aspects, and it is closely correlated with its surroundings.
