This chapter presents and discusses the book’s central theme: the experiences of gender inequality and violence faced by women who work as researchers and/or university professors in the social sciences. It also explains the emphasis of the research on Latin America, particularly Chile, where the ethnographic work that gave rise to this volume was carried out. We address the political complexities of investigating these phenomena while the extreme right advances (and deploys anti-scientific and anti-gender agendas in the region). The text explores the impact South American feminist mobilizations, especially since 2015, have had on the political demands of university students and academics, paying particular attention to the Chilean movement known as Mayo feminista [Feminist May] from 2018. In addition, it discusses the theoretical frameworks that support the volume, the research’s team methodological commitment to an “anti-manual,” and the narrative inspirations for the feminist ethnography carried out. Finally, it provides a guide to reading the book and explains the missing analyses that will be addressed in new writings.
