At present, fossil fuels are the main source of energy worldwide. Nevertheless, the heavy reliance on this type of energy resource is perceived as a significant contributor to environmental degradation and energy insecurity. In response, international and national policies are pivoting towards renewable energy integration. One of the key renewable energy technologies is concentrating solar power (CSP). Most of the CSP plants operating around the world are currently based on the steam Ranken cycle. Nevertheless, this cycle exhibits lower thermodynamic performance compared to the Brayton cycle (the ideal cycle for gas turbines). Consequently, research attention has also been given to the utilization of solar energy as a primary source of heat for driving the gas turbine engine. A solar gas turbine (SGT) uses concentrated solar radiation as a heat source. In this context, the third-generation CSP technology is expected be based on the Brayton cycle. This development shows that solar gas turbines will play a central role in the evolution of concentrating solar power.
