COVID-19 is a novel infectious disease first identified during late 2019 that spread globally during 2020. The illness, COVID-19, is caused by infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Widespread infection with substantial morbidity and mortality was seen worldwide. No demographic was spared. The pandemic took its greatest toll on older adults and on individuals with chronic medical conditions. As a group, pediatric patients suffer less overall morbidity and mortality, but certainly are susceptible to infection with SARS-CoV-2 and its complications including multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), long-term post-acute symptoms, colloquially referred to as long COVID, and death. Here, we discuss the virology of SARS-CoV-2, the clinical manifestations of the disease it causes, available treatment strategies, and long-term outcomes of COVID-19.
