This chapter examines the cultural aspect of the founding contradictory symbiosis of warlordism and monetary power as it reached is apogee under the Hapsburg (Holy Roman) Empire in the Iberian Peninsula. Its spectacular displays of the purifying extinction of evil and impurity in the public autos da fe (acts of faith) were symptoms of a social order which struggled to assert its religious unity by denying its undeniable dependence on the transnational monetary power which was undermining it from within.
