This chapter argues that anti-semitism has long been a duplicitous ideology inseparable from the expansion of the Western nation-state. Key evidence is supplied by Perry Anderson’s Passages from Antiquity to Feudalism and Abram Leon’s Jewish Question: a Marxist Interpretation, composed in 1942–3 but not published until the 1950s, after the author’s murder by the Nazis. Leon points out that the long-distance Jewish traders financed the feudal rulers until they were replaced by the larger “Christian” banks, which is when antisemitism became a systemic ideology put into practice as violent persecution and expulsion. This developed initially in Western Europe before moving eastwards in a pattern which accompanied the expansion of mercantile capitalism.
