The goal of this work is to understand the more pronounced issue of loss of slump retention observed in the case of LC3 type of binders. It has been found that the intrinsic reactivity of the calcined clays leads to the formation of early aluminate hydrates, most presumably ettringite, and appears to be a major factor for slump retention. It has been found that most sugars as well as sugar derivatives in combination with PCE can strongly enhance the slump retention of binders containing higher levels of calcined clays. However, only a few molecules were not detrimental in terms of hydration kinetics. This work will therefore focus on the impact of this molecule.
